When you visit our office for your i-CAT scan, you’ll be seated comfortably in an open area. The scan takes less than 20 seconds from start to finish. The records are saved as digital files, so they can be easily transferred to your referring dentist or specialist, and we will provide complementary software for viewing. If you have any questions about the i-CAT process not answered here, please feel free to contact our office in Plano.
The i-CAT is basically a compact, faster, and safer version of a traditional medical CT scan. Whereas a CT scans are often used to produce multiple images of the inside of the body (e.g. chest, abdomen, pelvis), the i-CAT scan is used only to produce images of the head – primarily the mouth, teeth, and jaw. Because the i-CAT scan is more targeted, it can be completed in a fraction of the time (about 10 seconds), and your radiation exposure is greatly reduced.
The i-CAT scan is painless, fast, and easy. As the scanner revolves around your head, you might hear a slight buzzing or whirring sound, which will only last for a few seconds. After the scan, you can return to your normal activities.
The i-CAT machine can be easily adjusted for your child’s height. The process is quick and comfortable, and the radiation dosage is up to a hundred times less than a traditional CT scan. Orthodontists often refer children to our practice for i-CAT images, which will allow them to provide more precise treatment.
